MAGE MATH TEAMS

Pardon the construction dust! A designated caregiver has to stay on site until we receive the state permit for drop offs - we don’t know how long this might take. Once we receive city approval, we will notify you that you can now drop off your child. You will have to sign that off during registration.

MAGE offers you two flavors of math team - competitive or casual. The sign up is for just the fall term, and there are 3 terms, with competitions spread out between them. In addition to team meetings, please see the additional meet schedule. Try out dates are over but you may be able to still try out during a regular meeting if there is stil space on the team. We also have visitor jump seats for your AMC8 ($25), 10(cost TBD) and 12(cost TBD) if you can’t take it anywhere else.

Grades K-8

Casual TEam

Description: A relaxed, low pressure, noncompetitive team, which does not require a try out. This team is for any student that wants to participate in math competitions and to pick up new competition skills once a month. This team is for any student in Grades K-1 (there is only one competition a year for this age range and it doesn’t happen until spring, though there will be optional for fun internal contests) and any other age students who don’t wish to be on the competitive team. There are 3 terms, each building skills on the foundation of the previous term. See notes at bottom of page for drop-in and for rolling enrollment.

Price, including the applicable for the grade competitions below:

  • $60 for grades K-3 for 3 meetings, no formal competitions this term

  • $120 for grades 4-8 for 3 meetings and additional competitions

  • Will be slightly higher for all teams in the second and third terms due to competition number and quantity. This will be a small increase for the K-1 team for the Math Kangaroo, but the older the child, the more expensive the team participation gets due to the volume of higher level competitions available and the amount of specific dates that we have to proctor.

Casual Team Schedule: This team has two sessions to choose from, Thursday or Sunday. Please note these meeting dates and also check the additional competition schedule for your grade!

2-Sunday, December 8, 2019 12:00PM-12:50PM

Competitive Team

Description: the team meets weekly, participates in several competitions over the course of a 30-week season. It runs in 3 10-week terms over the course of the year. The contests will mostly take place at MAGE. There is a pizza celebration and award ceremony at the end of each term. A math team is the opposite of a math circle. Please read the note at the bottom before you sign up about placement. Check out our other math programs if your child loves math but not competition. Please read page all the way to the bottom!

fall competition schedule by grade

Grades K-1: students will be meeting once per month to develop their skills toward participation in the Math Kangaroo optional meet on March 19th and toward other math competitions in the years that follow. You can read below how these things ramp up over time in further grades.

Grades 2-3: The first term of the year is developmental and the contests fall into the other two terms in the year. The fall session is the best chance to prepare for those contests. For example, in the second term, the Continental Math League the older kids get to do sooner happens 3 times for this age group. The first term is designed to leave students well-prepared.

Grades 4-6: Because these students are expected to be experienced in competition and more mature, they also have the following contest opportunities, some of which may fall outside of their normal meet time as follows:

  • Sunday, November 10, 2019, 2:00PM-2:50PM CML during competitive team meeting.

  • Sunday, November 17th, 2019, 2:00PM-3:30PM MOEMS, AMC8 during competitive team meeting. Note late end due to 2 contests.

  • Sunday, December 8, 2019, CML 2:00PM-2:50PM CML during competitive team meeting.

  • Sunday, December 15, 2019, 2:00PM-2:50PM. MOEMS will be administered during the 4-6 grade weekly meeting time window

Grades 7-8: Because these students are expected to be experienced in competition and more mature, they also have additional contest opportunities, some of which may fall outside of their normal meet time as follows, and will be exposed to the more intense and frequent competitions later in the year.

  • Sunday, November 10, 2019, 3:00PM-4:00PM CML during competitive team meeting.

  • Sunday, November 17, 2019, 3:00PM-4:30PM AMC8 and MOEMS will be administered during the during competitive team meeting.

  • Sunday, December 8, 2019, 3:00PM-3:50PM CML during competitive team meeting.

  • Sunday, December 15, 2019, 3:00PM-3:50PM MOEMS will be administered during the competitive team meeting.

Included in the competition team price are classroom practice materials, coaching fees, all the competitions listed, and a team celebration at the end of the 10 week session.

Price Does Not Include:

  • We accept checks and prefer that form of payment. There is a $25 bounced check fee.

  • If you choose to pay with a credit card, we will have to charge you a $5-$10 credit card processing fee.

Expected Skills to attend this class: students must have age-appropriate classroom social and emotional skills with no negative impact on others’ classroom experience. In addition they need to be fluent in reading, even at K level, because all math contests have written instructions. Please send only the children that will enjoy math activities.

Some Rules: Students are welcome to chew gum (please teach your kids to not put it on furniture if you give them any, and not to show off to others that may not have it, but other food is limited in the classroom. Please don’t send hungry children, they won’t do well. Water bottles are allowed and encouraged. Chair bands, fidgets welcome if they help concentrate. Fidgets may not be allowed during competition depending on type and competition - we will advise you ahead of time. No phones/video games allowed during class - they have to be put away.

Important Notes: In a math circle, you are presented with collaborative problems that may have multiple possible answers and stretch your imagination, without requiring a lot of prerequisite knowledge, while in a math team, you definitely need to know your age-appropriate material and to generalize it. If your child dislikes competition, but loves math, please consider the experimental math program or our math circle instead of the math team. If you like competition, please check out our robotics and lego competitive teams as well.

Please also note, for most national math contests, a student can’t take a competition for a grade less than their official school enrollment grade for public and private school, so if you have a mismatch between skill/age/grade, please check in with us before signing up. We will email you after the try to let you know if your child made the team. We have 3 different age bands for the teams, and will eventually divide up the team further. Math team will be offered in 3 10-week trimesters, and we will maintain the same days, but there may be changes to the times for the second and third terms. Please note the special contest days, like Math Kangaroo, that don’t fall within the normal practice schedule for some of the teams. This is more applicable toward the second term. If you are wondering why a certain math competition is not in our list, it may be because we are excluded as a non-public school, and so on. For some competitions we will require you to give us a letter from your school’s math teacher that you are not on the school math team also and or are not involved in the particular contest.

Make Up policy: if you miss a Thursday casual team meeting, a make-up may be possible in the Sunday casual team meeting if there is space. If you miss a competition, that’s it. Can’t make it up for most of them.

Seats: There are 8 seats in each competitive team and 15 seats in the non-competitive team. If we have enough interest, we will add instructors to allow for more capacity. Competitive team members get added in units because of teacher and competition constraints.

Drop ins: We will likely register as a test center for Math Kangaroo, and also allow AMC 8/10 seating for outsiders. Outsiders not in the team who wish to participate in a contest but not sit on the team should reach out to us as soon as possible as competition fees are due well in advance. We also will need to qualify you to participate with us, so you are looking at coming in 2 times if you wish to do these competitions, and we need to schedule your qualification round. We will charge you a small administrative participation fee with us on top of the contest fee.

Rolling enrollment:

  • Competitive team: at this time we are not planning to allow for rolling enrollment beyond the first 2 weeks of the program for the competitive team.

  • Casual team: We will allow rolling enrollment in the casual team, but you may not be eligible for all of the competitions. For AMC contests, see the drop-in section.
